Exactly where I’m supposed to be

The light of late has been great for shooting. Both dusk and dawn at this time of year in the southern hemisphere offer clear skies, interesting cloud formations and pinky, orange hues. I have been battling the cold mornings and crawling out of bed early for my morning swim. I had great concerns for the state of my toes yesterday morning when I got out of the water and was greeted by a 3 degree (celsius) wind chill. Concentrating on taking photos seems to distract my mind from its cold reality.

These wintry mornings, when the beaches are empty, the sand cold and the water dark, are my penance for the joy that the Australian summer has given me over the years. The warm water, crowded sand and noise are a distant memory. These cold mornings are silent. It is no place for those who aren’t comfortable being with their own thoughts. As I swim up from below the waves, I can see the light from the sun as it pokes its head over the horizon. As my face breaks the surface and as I take in that first breath I realise that this is exactly where I am supposed to be.

Looks warmer than it is.

    1. Thanks! All the photos in this post were taken on my Samsung s6. Brilliant camera for such a compact device. I have a Canon 700D that I also take pics on but sometimes lugging the DSLR around just isn’t practical.

    1. Thanks Maureen! It is lovely this time of year. I went for a walk this afternoon and the sky lit up in another light display. We are lucky enough to have whales migrating north past our beach at this time of year also 🙂

  1. This pictures are gorgeous! But the freezing temps sound awful- I wouldn’t be very happy in those conditions… pretty post though- makes me miss the beaches in California.

    1. I am certainly more of a ‘summer person’ too but I try to make the most of the cold weather. I’ve got 6 months of summer to look forward to soon as I travel the length of South America and up into Cuba and Mexico so I’ll be sure to get my dose of warm weather and water then.

      1. Ah I’m so jealous! That’s going to be an awesome adventure. I like winter weather mainly when I’m in a cabin in the mountains or at home celebrating the holidays with my family. It’s when it gets perpetually gross out and my commute to works is freezing, that the slush and snow wears on me!

      2. We’re lucky enough to not get snow here in Sydney but it gets really windy and cold through winter. The daily commute is full of frowning, sick people. Hope you’re making the most of your summer. I’ll continue to daydream of an NYC summer as I scroll through Instagram.
